A task "due end of day Friday" set in London is already Saturday in Sydney and still Friday afternoon in Los Angeles. The window where everyone is genuinely at their desk is short — London and New York overlap for only a few hours, and adding Sydney collapses the three-way overlap toward zero — so the calendar date of an asynchronous deadline is often what actually coordinates the team.

The reliable habit is to anchor the date in one canonical zone and read across from there. UTC is the honest choice for anything international because it carries no daylight-saving ambiguity and no home-team bias, and it is the one column that stays fixed while the others slide by an hour as northern and southern hemispheres change clocks in opposite seasons. Worked example

Anchor something to the start of July 12 in UTC and the eight zones do not agree it is the twelfth. In Los Angeles, seven hours behind, that instant is still the evening of July 11 — a full calendar day earlier. In Tokyo and Sydney, hours ahead, it is already well into July 12 and heading for the thirteenth. So a task "due July 12," read literally, is due on the 11th, the 12th, or effectively the 13th of someone's local calendar depending on their longitude — nobody misread it, the date simply means different days to different people.

Why does one date show up as a different day in some hubs?

Because a calendar date is not a single global instant. The reference moment behind your date falls at a different local time in each zone, and for cities far enough east or west that local time lands on the previous or the next calendar day. Seeing all eight hubs at once surfaces exactly where the date rolls over, so you know whose version of the date you actually mean.

Which zone should I treat as canonical?

For anything international, UTC — it has no daylight-saving shifts and no home-team bias, so it is the one anchor everyone can translate from consistently. Settle the date in UTC, then read across the hubs to see the local calendar date each office will experience. State deadlines with the zone explicit ("23:59 UTC on the 12th") rather than "end of day," which means several different instants across a global team.

Does daylight saving change the answer?

Yes, and unpredictably, because the northern and southern hemispheres switch clocks in opposite seasons. New York can be four or five hours behind London depending on the month, and the London–Sydney gap swings by two hours across the year. A slot that rolled over cleanly in June can flip the date in November without anyone changing it — one more reason to anchor to UTC, which never shifts.
