How the Support Ticket Response Deadline works

The Support Ticket Response Deadline calculator turns an SLA promise into a timestamp. Enter when the ticket was opened, the target in business hours, and your working window (9am–5pm by default) and workweek, and it returns the exact moment the SLA expires — with the rollover across evenings and weekends handled for you.

The mechanic it automates: the clock spends whatever remains of today’s working window, then resumes at the next working day’s opening time. A 4-hour target on a ticket opened at 3pm Friday burns two hours before close of business and lands its deadline at 11am Monday. Tickets that arrive outside the window — overnight or on a weekend — start their clock at the next window open, not immediately.

Support policies usually stack several clocks: first response and resolution, each varying by priority tier. The deadline arithmetic is identical for every cell of that matrix — only the hour count changes — so run the calculator once per clock that applies. It is also a quick independent check on the SLA schedules configured in your helpdesk: if the platform’s deadline disagrees with a hand-computed one, the platform’s business-hours calendar is usually what’s misconfigured.

Worked example

A ticket opened at 4:50pm Friday with a 4-business-hour first-response target and a 9am–5pm window: ten minutes tick off before 5pm Friday, and the remaining 3 hours 50 minutes resume at 9am Monday — so first response is due at 12:50pm Monday, not 8:50pm Friday.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when a ticket arrives outside business hours?

The clock starts at the next working day’s opening time, not at the moment of arrival. A ticket filed at 10pm Tuesday with a 4-hour target starts counting at 9am Wednesday and is due at 1pm Wednesday.

How do I handle first-response and resolution targets, or multiple priorities?

Run one calculation per clock. First response and resolution start at the same moment but have different hour targets, so they produce different deadlines — enter the same opened time with each target. The same applies across priority tiers.

What about tickets that were paused in a pending-customer state?

Helpdesk platforms stop the SLA clock while waiting on the customer. When the clock resumes, compute a fresh deadline: use the resume time as the start and the business hours that remained at the pause as the target.
